Who was the inspiration for this cartoon, Darrin, Hm?

Hopefully, people will KNOW the "obnoxious" does not REALLY apply to actual therapists. When people go through therapy, however, there is a moment when the patient HATES the therapist for making them face hurtful memories or feelings. Those who can MAKE IT THROUGH the feelings can get better. Those who LEAVE therapy and don't get a different therapist often just stay in the same old revolving cycle of feeling like a victim and being angry. I, personally, did go through therapy but I needed to change therapists at different points in the therapy. Some use one method, and others use a different method. I didn't know that. This cartoon makes fun not of therapists, but of the patients. In my opinion. The remark about "juicy" is a very big FEAR of patients. So, it has nothing actually to do with making a statement about the therapist. In my opinion. I think. Maybe. Sort of. Kind of. ??????

as a psychologist myself, i was pleased to see the first panel. i get what's happening in the rest (that the therapist doesn't really mean that he'll share confidential information), but frodo59's comment provides some support for what i fear: that people won't get the joke, or already believe that therapists routinely do share confidential information inappropriately. (or, in the case of people who have seen evidence from people who do break the rules, i fear those folks will not realize that those people should *not* be doing that and there are, in fact, rules and laws about this stuff.)

it depends on the therapist's profession what the particular rules are, but no therapist with a license is supposed to be sharing confidential information for anything other than professional or emergency-related reasons. if people have evidence of confidentiality-breaking behavior, they should complain to the relevant state board.

so. . . i will be interested to see where this is going, and i hope my comment is of some use to people who don't see why the therapist in panel two should be taken as making a (bad) joke only.

Precisely why I don't get shrunk. When ex-wife was a medical assistant, she'd hear the juicy bits from the shrink's staff during lunch.
