The syndicate thought this week’s Candorville strips would complement a Charles Krauthammer column, so they wanted to send one strip out along with it to Krauthammer’s clients. The only problem, his column ran last Friday, and these strips wouldn’t run until this week. It would be bad form (not to mention a breach of contract) to run these strips before they ran in newspapers, so Amy Lago called me and asked if I could create one additional strip. “No problem,” I thought. Then I read further. “Can you get it to us in three hours?”For two and a half hours, I stared at my computer screen, watching the digits on the clock advance steadily, almost stoically toward zero hour, almost as if they were mocking me. Digits are notoriously sadistic. The problem was, the series ends on a satisfying note – so satisfying that I just couldn’t think of a way to continue it without it feeling pathetically drawn out. Then it hit me out of nowhere:Jar Jar Binks. If you can’t continue a series because it’s reached a logical conclusion, you can always exploi– I mean, deepen the series by adding a prequel! Here’s the prequel to this week’s strips. I have no way of knowing how many papers it appeared in alongside Krauthammer’s column, but I came across this one by chance (“by chance” these days means “Google”) in the Boston Herald:—————————————————This cartoon is about:NASA, drunk astronauts, alcoholism, cosmonauts, rocket, rockets, scandals, astronauts drinking, career disappointment, space race, space age, space station, space programTranscript:Panel One: [setting=a downtown rooftop / action=Lemont Brown is listening to a boom box radio](radio) This just in: a manned NASA rocket has disappeared from radar.Panel Two: (radio) A recent investigation found astronauts had been flying while drunk. But NASA insists the disappearance has nothing to do with alcohol.Panel Three: (radio) “It’s just a computer glitch,” said a spokesman.Panel Four: [action=a NASA landing module is parachuting down to the roof, behind Lemont, who hasn’t yet noticed it](astronaut, from within capsule) Houshton, we have a problem-em.**(drunktalk for “Houston, we have a problem”)
