  1. B Rhodes says:

Ken beat me to it. It’s a COMIC STRIP. Comics have ALWAYS had violence, sometimes on-screen. I didn’t see anyone complain months ago when that boot camp sergeant punched Lemont in the gut, or when that big thug was choking Clyde. Both of those were hilarious in a comic strip, but would’ve been horrendous in real life.

I read Pearls Before Swine and Sherman’s Lagoon too, and the thought of the crocs and the shark eating people in the strips is funny, but in REAL LIFE it would be gruesome and awful. The comic world reflects the world we live in, and comics like Candorville do that more than most… but still the comic world is not supposed to BE the world we live in, so lighten up. My two cents.

  2. Ken says:

The debate seem rather silly to me. The gender of the parties should make no difference. Why would a peaceful person care only if the violence occurs between characters of opposite sex? Surely, no one here is for male-on-male violence and wants to see Cylde beating up Lemont. So, all reference to all physical violence is out?
And, there are forms of abuse other than physical. Must the characters always speak kindly to each other?
Further, as the 1/26 strip point out, some people object to the human on fish/fowl/mammal violence that results in the dinner to most of us sit down to every day. Should strips portraying non-vegan meals be avoided?
Give the artist a little latitude to make some jokes with some off screen violence. These strips do not reflect what would happen in a perfect world. But… that world might not be very funny.
The newspapers are full of safe, sanitized comics. If you were traumatized by this strip you should probably be reading those.

And by the way, NO WAY should Lemont have told Susan first. He should’ve called Roxanne as soon as he left the office. But he did go to Susan, so that should be a sign to him that he’s with the wrong person.

  4. Davrash Sani says:

I see your point, Andre, but I have to tell you, I laughed, even though I myself have been slapped before; SEVERAL times (I was basically a dog in college). One girl who wrongly THOUGHT she caught me cheating on her (funny story by the way) slapped me and then bashed in my windshield and my headlights with my favorite trophy. I know you think i probably should’ve gone to the cops, but it didn’t even occur to me. I don’t know why, but it just doesn’t bother me the way the thought of a man hitting a woman or destroying the woman’s property bothers me. Maybe I’m a chauvinist or something.

  5. Carol A. says:

OMFG. She slapped him and ripped up his favorite hat and jacket. Women do stuff like that when we’re pissed, Andre, and we get away with it no matter how P.C. you want to be about it. Yeah it sucks, but it’s true.

I can’t stand when people want to ignore the biological differences between men and women in order to be preachy and politically correct. A woman slapping a man usually won’t hurt anything but his pride. But a man slapping a woman, because men are stronger, can cause real damage. A typical woman can bruise a man with a hard slap, but an angry man can KILL a woman with a hard slap. I’m athletic, I lift weights, but my younger, shorter, much scrawnier brother can still beat me at arm wrestling in two seconds flat and toss me over his shoulder. It’s because men and women are built differently. That’s why it’s so much more important to prevent violence by men against women, and why (sorry) this kind of thing against men is not nearly as big a deal.

    We’re different. Get over it.

  6. Andrei613 says:

The man hating sexism in this wretched "cartoon" is despicable. I am 100% certain that you would never have drawn a 'comic' where the MAN had beaten a WOMAN for the small disagreement over whom was told first.

This is just sexist excuse mongering for violent women. As long as the popular culture treats violent women, and the depictions of same, as being fine and normal, well, you will reap what you sow…

If it's domestic violence when a man assaults a woman, and thats a serious crime, as covered by the sexist Violence Against Woman Act, well guys and dolls, its JUST as much a serious crime when a woman assaults a man.

Until you get that fact of real equality, you ARE a part of the problem. Do better. Be less bigoted towards men.

  7. PeaceZGood says:

By the way, is this the job “promotion” in which he gets no pay? Urggggh.

  8. PeaceZGood says:

The issue of spousal abuse … this shows if Lemont actually married that girl, she’d be doing even worse. It doesn’t get better. Only worse. The way Lemont looked, he should have gone right to the police station and had his fiance put into jail. In my opinion.
    🙁

  9. SteveS says:

He is an idiot, but not for the reason he’s thinking. He got the order of importance right, but he still doesn’t seem to realize why.
