Oops. “heart,” not “hart.” And I love Conan O’Brien (liked him even better during the writers strike when he had to improv his own material), so thanks.

People always get extra literal when satire bothers them. I drew a cartoon years ago wherein Dick Cheney #8 had a heart attack and died, so they cloned another one. Someone wrote “That’s a total lie. Dick Cheney has never died, and has never been cloned.” I drew a series of strips in which George W. Bush snapped and began adding signing statements to everything he could get his hands on – restaurant menus, restroom signs, and finally the Constitution. One outraged reader wrote “That’s untrue. Bush has only added signing statements to laws passed by Congress, not to anything else. Get your ‘facts’ straight.”

Exaggeration is the essence of satire. People conveniently forget that when the satire is aimed at them or at something or someone they support.

Another tactic in the battle against the messenger is to claim the cartoon cherry picked topics and left others out. Of COURSE it did. The cartoon has four panels to get a point across. It’s a snippet of information. A brief commentary on the hart of a situation. If you want a comprehensive examination of an issue, read a dissertation, or a book. The catalyst for the protests was China’s recent crackdown on dissent in Tibet. Some also protested their backing of the Janjawee, others brought up their political prisoners, still others protested their forced migrations from rural China to cities. But it was their brutal response to Tibetan monks’ protests that grabbed headlines and led to the immense crowds along the torch routes. As soon as you get newspapers to give cartoonists an entire page each instead of a tiny 3.5″ x 1.25″ space, I’ll start including all facets of every issue..

Not very truthful….no one wants to beat the%$#@ out of the torch runners. Yes, it’s about Tibet, but it’s also about China backing the Janjawee in Darfur, ferchrissakes. I’m proud of the way that torch was protested and the wisdom to detour the thing. The point was made, there was no blood-letting and the Olympics has nothing to do with sports since 1938 and 1972. Loved the empty chair and you do a great Conan O’Brien. Power to the People…….

  4. Classic! Nice one.
BTW, I’m going to send an email to tell SFC to keep it!!

😀 This is SO funny. And so true to life. The drawing is incredible. I was wondering where Lemont was, because he wasn’t in his chair. I had to look twice and then noticed him standing behind the guy with the sign. Love the hairdo and chin on the reporter. So realistic for a comic. I think, if I am not mistaken, that is a “CNN” or something microphone? I also am noticing the look on Lemont’s face. At first, he’s “with it” with the demonstration, and then when he hears what the guy is saying, he’s shocked. Very astute art.;)
