Time out, there’s a hurricane in my eyes.

Spread the love

I remember when we were kids, and we were losing a game of four square, the sun would conveniently be in our eyes. That’s why we lost. It wasn’t because we sucked.

Anyone notice how Hurricane Gustav has conveniently prevented George W. Bush and Dick Cheney, the two least popular men in the Republican Party (if not the country), from speaking at the Republican Convention today? If they were anyone else, I might suspect they were exploiting a disaster for political purposes. But since these people have never done anything like that before, I’m sure they only have the interests of the citizens of New Orleans at heart. Thank God.

**UPDATE– Since the hurricane failed to deliver the blow the Media had hoped for (CNN’s now calling themselves the “election center” again, after being the “hurricane center” just yesterday), Bush is going to have to speak today (Tuesday). This reminds me of the times in the Eighties when I was supposed to do homework but got sidetracked by Robotech and He-Man. Then, of course, I had to ride my bike around the block a few times before dinner. And after dinner, there was always Three’s Company or the Cosby Show. Then, probably because of the bike riding, I was tired. Who could blame me? In the midst of self-hate and panic the next morning, I would sometimes see rainclouds gathering beyond the avocado tree in our backyard. I would pray for a hurricane or a twister to cause massive carnage and destruction so I wouldn’t have to face an angry teacher. But since this was Los Angeles, I never had that kind of luck. I always had to own up to my mistakes. But I always had a two hour school bus-ride to either do my homework or (almost as often) to think up a good excuse.

Maybe when he speaks at the convention (well, not really AT the convention, he’ll be putting in a brief cameo on video from the White House) Bush will offer one hell of an excuse tonight for the last eight years. One we haven’t already heard a thousand times, I mean.

Have you heard open-mic antic of GOP pundits expressing their doubts once they thought they were off the air? Peggy Noonan responds to the claim of Palin being qualified by saying: ““The most qualified? No. I think they went for the — excuse me — political bullshit about narratives. … Every time the Republicans do that, because that’s not where they live and that’s not what they’re good at, they blow it.” Mike Murphy, a top campaign adviser in 2009, comments: “The greatness of McCain is no cynicism and this is cynical.”

At least some Republicans (mostly off the record) think that it’s fair to criticize Palin. They like to trot out the “sexist” label and try to bully critics with political correctness. Obviously, they worry that Palin can’t stand up to the criticism so they have to muzzle critics.

My guess is that McCain would change the locks on the convention hall if Bush or Cheney tried to show up. Maybe Cheney will crawl in a window
I think Jacob is correct. God is punishing the Republicans for choosing a woman whose daughter fornicates. And, with four named storms! Clearly God is very, very, very, very angry with the GOP.

  3. Jacob says:

Is it me or does anyone else see Pat Robertson preaching how this is a sign from God how to vote if a hurricane would have hit during the Democrat convention?

Hi, Ken. Maybe I’m more cynical. but I believe that Bush and Cheney will DEVISE a way. Also, my cynical nature says that Bush has been saying good things that he was told to say in order to put a good “spin” on himself, as he is usually selfish and self centered. 🙁

No, but I hear on the religious TV station they are now SELLING discs which tell what candidates to vote for…now, am I crazy, or is this NOT separation of church and state? If the religious right votes in a candidate, aren't we then a nation ruled by one religion? So, am I a little nuts or what to have some hostility about this "Holy Takeover" plan? And am I over reaching by comparing this to terrorist designs to take over a country? The only dif is that overseas, they do it with killing, and here they do it with brainwashing, blackmail and holy guilt trips. (Hypocritical, of course, but often very effective for their plots and plans). I don't think I'm being paranoic. Paranoia is when you only THINK people are trying to sabotage or hurt you. What the republicans have been doing all along is to ACTUALLY sabotage the democratic nominees. God doesn't have to do evil to evil people to make them evil or stop them from being evil. In this case, there are evil people and the only way we can stop them is to get out the vote for Obama. I know too many people who are confused because of misinformation put out by the Republicans who say they will NOT VOTE AT ALL. It's up to us to help change their minds, because not voting at all is going to have the effect of WALKING the Republicans into office.

This is, of course, a huge blow to McCain. Without the credibility and eloquence of George Bush and the warmth and candor of Dick Cheney it’s had to see how Republicans make the case to the American public.
The guiding stars of American politics will not be shining this week in Minneapolis. How will they find their way?
