New Commenting System – what do you think?

Spread the love

I’m trying out a new commenting system. You may see a “login to post” button, but you DO NOT have to log in or register in order to post. Logging in just gives you more options: the option to respond directly to other comments, the option to be notified by e-mail when someone replies to your comment, the option to subscribe to an RSS feed for comments, the option to automaticallycopy your comments to your own Twitter stream, for instance (and if you’re one of the 98% of people who doesn’t know what that means, don’t worry about it), among other things.

Let me know whether you like it, and remember, even if you see a “login to post” button, feel free to ignore it if you don’t care about the extras.

Even if it's a little confusing, more people seem to be commenting with it than without it, so I'll keep it. B)

It's ok. I just sign in when it says to. For each topic, it asks LATER for you to sign in to get your comment posted. That's not a problem for me NBD (no big deal)

I’ve gone back to the barebones WordPress comment system because too many people thought they had to log in to use the Intense Debate system. You didn’t have to, but the “login to comment” button it had at the top was confusing.

The comments are still integrated with Intense Debate, so if you’re signed up with Intense Debate you can still track & manage all your comments at their website. And if they ever tell me how to remove the “login” button (or someone sends me a CSS workaround telling me how to do that myself), I’ll reactivate it.

I never used the old comment system because it *appeared* that needed to login to comment. And since my comments at the time were going to be rather small, it was a barrier I never crossed.
But while I'm commenting here, let me say that I enjoy the comics tremendously.

If I don't see more responses by today at Noon (Pacific), I'll assume the new comment system IS confusing and go back to the old one.

fwiw, i never posted a comment on the other system. this seems similar to disqus which is the system i use on my blogs. the folks at automattic do a great job, so this should work. it's not too confusing. i prefer logging in so i can see all my comments in one place, use the same profile, consisten avatar, etc. and once i'm logged in, i stay logged in. it's just the initial view had at least two login buttons.

      btw, love the cartoons!

I chose this over disqus because pretty much every “intense debate vs. disqus” search I did turned up preferences for ID. Also, WordPress's parent company just bought ID, so this seemed to make more long term sense.

Also, I think it just looks better.

not sure about the commenting system. haven't used intense debate before. there do seem to be too many "login" buttons, so signing in, even with openid, is too complicated. did want to say that i do miss about half the cartoons because they're not included in your RSS feed. have you considered changing that, maybe embedding ads in the feed?

    • candorville says:

You don't have to log in at all to use it, but I'm worried that all the login buttons will make people think they have to. That's a shame because the system allows video embedding, which is great for comments. If someone can post a Youtube clip as a response to something, that'd be entertaining to me.

But if the unnecessary "login" buttons are too confusing and stifle conversation, I'll revert back to the standard, bare bones comments.

As for including comics in the RSS feed, the version of Comicpress I'm using has some bug preventing that. I have a designer redesigning the Candorville site and when he's finished it'll be using the new Comicpress and the comics should appear in the feed.
