Absolutely right – the whole issue is irrelevant, and I can't believe all this heat is being focused on her. And since when does anyone give a sh-t what the Newt has to say? I can't believe (I'm awash in disbelief these days) how much airtime he's being given for his gasbag pontificating. I think he's just jealous about the attention given his fellow gasbag Rush. And speaking of fellows, I should have referred to "my fellow liberal Democrats" rather than my liberal Democrat friends.

  2. motherseer says:

I have a question. When is the strip highlighting the hypocrisy of the right for their attacks on Nancy Pelosi? How has the CIA suddenly become this unquestionable bastion of honesty and openness? HELLO, it's their business to obfuscate! Why are so many of my liberal Democrat friends ripping her apart for saying they lied to her? And how has this become about what SHE said instead of about WHAT THEY DID? Those who act shocked at claims the CIA lied should think of Capt. Reynaud in Casablanca ("There's gambling here!") and dial back their outrage.

Patience. Newspaper cartoonists like Darrin work weeks in advance, and all that crap the GOP gave us about the CIA never lying was just a few days ago. So I'd guess the soonest you'd see anything about that in Candorville is 2 or 3 weeks from now.

Also, I'm glad it's not all politics all the time. I'd get bored of it.

    • candorville says:

Short answer: Cedric's right about the lead-time. Shorter answer: stay tuned.

"Why are so many of my liberal Democrat friends ripping her apart for saying they lied to her?"

Because she's the Speaker of the House and because "they only told us it was an option open to them, not that they were going to actually do it" is a BS answer. It belongs right up there with "I only voted to give President Bush the authorization to use force, I didn't expect him to actually do it." If those sorts of things aren't lies, they're at least admissions of incredible naivete. Of course the Bush administration was going to go to war, and of course they were going to do anything they could get away with with their prisoners. Millions of Democrats who weren't members of Congress realized that at the time.

Nancy Pelosi shouldn't have said that. She should've just stuck to the argument that because it was classified she had no right to complain publicly, and because she was no longer ranking member of the committee, it was proper for Jane Harman (and not Pelosi) to send that complaint letter. She shouldn't have tried to tell us she didn't think Bush's CIA would actually do it. It's really hard to believe she'd be that naive.

After eight years of this sort of thing from our leaders, Democrats don't like being lied to, by anyone. So if your friends are pissed, that's probably why.

That said (hate saying that after drawing that strip last Saturday, but…), I don't think the whole issue is relevant. I don't care what she knew and when she knew it. She's not the one who ordered the torture of all those war prisoners, that was the Bush regime, with the help of the Republican-controlled Congress. When Pelosi was sworn in as Speaker, the Democrats passed an anti-torture bill, which Bush vetoed. That's what matters.

      • Ken says:

I resent Pelosi for (apparently) being less than honest. However, it is a side show. The central issue is that torture was wrong. We should consider the consequences for the people who gave the orders. Pelosi's mistakes were secondary and we shouldn't let anyone let her problems distract us from the central issue of torture.

I don't know whether to be amused or saddened by Lemont's relationship with his mother. I think I'll go with amused! 🙂
