  1. Brian says:

Dr. Noodle is not the most skillful therapist, but he’s right on this one. Giving answers and advice in therapy just doesn’t work: people tune out or get irritated. And what would be the point if it did? I didn’t become a therapist to create an army of zombies who do what I say. I can’t solve your problems for you. How arrogant would that be? I can help you develop some skills that might help you solve (or manage) your problems. I’m not here to give you fish; I’m here to help you learn to fish.

    • Chayafradle says:

Of the 6 years or so of therapy I've had over my lifetime, one psychologist did answer some of my questions and it was life changing. He knew I did care and would listen. I asked how long it takes for pain to go away after being dumped. He said it may be a cliche but it's true that time heals all wounds. You don't forget, but the pain lessens. Another question I asked was "Why me?" He explained I did nothing wrong and that some people look to be made respectable and worthy by marrying someone respectable and worthy. When that doesn't give the person the self esteem he or she is looking for, they go elsewhere looking for the self esteem, respectability and worthiness. Without the answers to those two questions I would have constantly blamed myself! It hurt so badly! I can relate both to your comment and also to the strip. I can see both viewpoints.
