Or, to take another approach, you could go home and rethink your life.

Hal, you should watch the video that is posted online of Darren speaking at a seminar in the Bay area. It is a telling story.
My other favorite is "Cat and Girl" very good, very ironic. Very Smart.

I agree with Mary C. In fact, the whole PURPOSE of calling it "Candor" in Candorville is in the def. of the word CANDOR. What I personally find interesting is that Darrin Bell can do biting commentary with humor. I still remember when he had one politician who was, in effect, hiding from making a choice portrayed as a hidden person under a table covered with a tablecloth. He's never mean or vicious in his commentary. He's very humorous. Politically, I find Rush Limbaugh style commentary to be vicious and mean. Actually, on the other side, I've never heard a vicious or mean comment from anyone whether it is a comic or a politician. Socially, Darrin hits the nail on the head using a hammer made of foam.

To Hal: Perhaps you are a brand new reader who is unfamiliar with Darrin Bell's work, or maybe you were just in the wrong frame of mind when you read his comics based on the homeless, and that is why you expressed opposition by using sarcastic praise. Darrin NEVER makes fun of people with alcohol addictions. He NEVER tries to get us to laugh at people who are going bankrupt from huge medical bills or who have mental illness. He consistently offers insightful commentary on human nature and on our society's foibles. Really, he sees each character as human. He focuses on certain aspects of each. I have no doubt that Darrin is more devoted to issues of social justice than most people…and his work advances those causes by making us think. And yes, his work makes us see the humor in our wild and funny and tragic and difficult world. To Darrin: Thank you for your excellent work!

  5. Hal says:

    Dear Darrin,

Your recent series of comics based on homeless bums is spot on. In fact, I think you could go further. You should bring up the major causes of homelessness. You could make fun of people with alcohol addictions. You could bring us to laugh at people going bankrupt from huge medical bills. And mental illness–that would give you a wealth of material.

    Best of luck!
