The Tea Partiers are convinced that health care reform will explode the deficit, because they either ignore the CBO’s study (that showed it’ll REDUCE the deficit by $1.3 trillion over the next 20 years), or they’re all Buddhists or nihilists who don’t believe “the next 20 years” actually exists. Either that, or they’re just having trouble seeing both sides of the equation.

Maybe it has something to do with our poor attention spans. I understand, I hated math too. Sometimes the economy is just like Mrs. Dessiletts’ 4th grade math class, and I have trouble paying attention because of her perfume, and… what were we talking about?

One of the problems Democrats have had is that it’s very easy to understand the one thing the bill does to spend money—purchase insurance for people who can’t afford it—and considerably harder to explain the many things it does to save money. Another is that a lot of the savings have to do with changing how medicine is practiced, which people are less familiar with than how insurance is purchased.
But the fact that the cost controls are complicated and numerous doesn’t mean they’re absent, or that they won’t work.
