    Chaya, you are so young. That is the late George Wallace. He was a governor of a Southern state when I was just a lad, and became the face of obstructionist neoConfederate intransigence during a certain phase of the Civil Rights movemnt.

      Oh, yes, I do remember, but I was under the impression there was a George Wallace who was the head of the Nazi party in America. Is this a different George Wallace?

    This is accurate. In the early 70's, interracial couples who were married in one state could not check into a hotel together in another state. It was the Federal government who needed to make the issue of marriage a united law for the whole country.
