Funny, I wouldn't have thought a black professional would like "Bewitched", because of all the racial undertones and their acceptance.

    • Darrin Bell says:

Bewitched was an allegory about the intolerance and bigotry interracial couples faced in the 1960s – something that couldn't have been explored directly on TV at the time. For its time, it was subversive and progressive.

      • bcmayes says:

And for that reason, it clearly *was* the much better show. Jeannie, though funny, was just a typical '60s sitcom ripoff (from the magic blonde right down to the brunette cousin).

        • Darrin Bell says:

I agree. Jeannie's comic timing (especially Dr. Bellows and Major Nelson's exchanges) was brilliant, but Bewitched was a more important show.

          • ChayaFradle says:

I think I watched every episode of Bewitched, and NEVER equated it with a mixed marriage. It WAS. You are right! Wow.

          • Mellaril says:

…and it probably didn't hurt that watching "Bewitched," you heard "Darrin" on TV.

Did anybody call you Derwood, Deadwood, etc., growing up?

          • Darrin Bell says:

I don't know, I've mastered the art of repressing my childhood memories.

          • ChayaFradle says:

I'm sure you were called all those and more. I've heard the name "Darien" as well.

      • SuburbanEcology says:

Oy! >face-palm< Of course! I never made the connection before … you're rocking my whole sit-com history point of reference. Now I have to go back and re-examine why I wanted to be a warlock for Halloween when I was four, and why Uncle Arthur was my favorite character on the show …

I foresee some serious analysis in my future. Either that, or I'm going to have to re-watch the whole series all over again.

  2. Mellaril says:

As an adolescent male watching the shows, Jeannie held more appeal but Elizabeth Montgomery had her moments, especially as the brunette Serena. Come to think of it, I also really liked the brunette version of Jeannie.

  3. SuburbanEcology says:

I would like to disagree vociferously. "I Dream of Jeannie" was CLEARLY the better sit-com, if only due to the contributions of the great Bill Daly.

Besides, the frisson between Jeannie and Tony living together in the same house without being married just made for more interesting plots than you got with Darrin's and Samantha's quotidian married lifestyle.

Of course, once they got married on "I Dream of Jeannie", the series fell apart. The same happened when Adam was born on "Bewitched" …

    • MisTeryWriter says:

Yes, there also was a sexual side of I Dream of Jeannie. I need not say it is every man's dream to have a woman who is his slave and will fulfill his every wish. She showed more skin than on Bewitched. I think both series fell apart because over time, the lawyers of the actors always ask for more money. In doing so, they run the risk of being shut down. It does SEEM as though what you said may be the case, doesn't it? Same with Buffy the Vampire Slayer. They got cancelled after she got her man.

    • ChayaFradle says:

Hurrumph. I vote for Bewitched. It was CLEARLY the better sitcom because it was more family oriented. I wouldn't have let my SONS watch I Dream of Jeannie as teenagers because she was too sexy, and because of the anti-feminist manifesto implied.

      • laser plumb bob says:

sex is evil … dang it!!! Jeannie was probably more fun for most of us guys … sex is evil … sexy is evil …. just ask my estranged wife … sex is evil … and where did your sons come from Chaya ? … sex is evil … but take that right wing vow to propagate robustly … use up all the water … pollute all the air … drill baby drill … clog the hwys … crowd the schools … fire the teachers … overheat the planet … propagate robustly … claim your all dependents …. clear the rain forests … sex is evil … yup .. I get it … be bad … too bad … next time Lemont, use a rubber, oh yeah, you figgered that out now …

  4. Macushla says:

And yes, clearly "Bewitched" was superior.

  5. Macushla says:

Kidlet lawyer: "Objection, Your Honor! Counsel Edwards failed to qualify Witness Russell as an expert witness." Dammit, Jim! He's a mystery writer, not a doctor!
Darrin's "What?" "What?" cross-purposes lines are always wonderful.

  6. MisTeryWriter says:

He's not delusional, but I'd say I Dream Of Jeannie and Bewitched are a very close tie. I believe both were turned into movies which did NOT do either of them justice. I wonder what has become of the little baby girl in Bewitched?
