In my experience, it's more like at 12:55 if you're rushing home from work to wait for him, or 5:30, if you've given up and gone out for groceries. Not that I've ever had cable, dish or even netflix., but the issue is the same w/ waiting for the gas, phone or electric company. As for cable et al, much to the dismay of younger son, who calls me Amish, I can't see wasting money I don't have to get sucked into watching TV I don't like, with time I can't spare. [altho I've been sorely tempted by the chance to watch Colbert, Maddow, Monk, Law & Order: Criminal Intent or reruns of DS-9 w/o having to root thru my son's VCR tapes of all the series.] Also, my snark does not apply to folks who live in the mountains, farm country, Alaska, or other places where broadcast TV is hard to come by.

      Bubbe, what's a "snark"?

      • Macushla Bubbe says:

A snark is a snide remark, also a word coined by Lewis Carroll for a fictitious creature in his poem, "The Hunting of the Snark." By "my snark," I was referring to my dismissal of cable as a waste of money, not a household necessity. I was saying that this snide remark about cable, dish & the like, does not apply to people who live were regularly broadcast [i.e., free] programming is either not received, or received unreliably, such as the areas I mentioned.

So, you don't watch television? I'm really upset that in order to get television, we have to pay monthly fees to some company for the airwaves. Did people all over the world change from analog to digital?

          • Macushla Bubbe says:

Of course I watch TV! What am I, Amish;-? I just watch broadcast TV– as my son moans, "5 lousy channels!" Actually, since digital conversion, we get a few more, attached to the original group, but that's mostly junk– altho one of them [the fox affiliate, no less– but the local news are nothing like Faux news– they have one of the most liberal reporters in town!] now on their Ch. 2.2, shows vintage TV shows & movies– I get to revisit All in the Family– and found myself tearing up at Stretch (Jerome) Cunningham's funeral episode.
We use a digital converter box… not as good as cable– the biggest casualty, alas, is that I can no longer pick up our PBS channel, which is devastating! Their signal is too weak. That is another temptation to get cable, or at least to get a newer TV w/ built-in converter. I live in an apt. and the bldg has no antenna, so that's limiting. Landlord recently called to ask if I have Charter [as IF! To quote my late mother, "Charter can go to blazes!" My one son & his girlfriend cancelled theirs after one week, it was so terrible.] Charter truck had been blocking our driveway when Landlord was going to mow the lawn & the guy wouldn't move– got rough w/ our aged landlord! Absurd. Then LL asked what cable I do get, and couldn't believe it when I said none!
