Thought Different, part 3

Spread the love

ATTN San Francisco Chronicle readers: the Chron balked at running today’s strip, replacing it with an older generic one. They thought Lemont’s mockery of Google and the other corporations that he thinks use Apple as the computer industry’s divining rod, went too far. As far as I know, the Chronicle is the only paper to not run today’s strip.

If you’re a Chronicle reader and you’re annoyed that they interrupted Steve Jobs’ final journey on the afterlife train, and you want them not to pre-empt the strip again, e-mail datebookletters@sfchronicle.com, or call them and politely let them know how you feel. They do listen to their readers.

In the meantime, as always, you can read the uncensored version at Candorville.com.

I was tempted to stay up past midnight to check out this controversial strip after reading the tweet but decided to get my beauty sleep. After finishing last week’s American Horror Story (note: when your horror-loving friend tells you a show is creepy, it’s because it’s creepy) I went to sleep. Woke up at 3am (the witching/ devil’s hour some say) with an eerie feeling and contemplated turning on a small light. Decided instead to pick up my beautiful, sleek iPhone 4S to surf around and get my mind off the weird image that was floating in my head. Remembered the aforementioned tweet and read this strip. A few minutes later closed my eyes and fell back asleep. Woke up before my alarm went off and in my semi-conscious state wasn’t sure why Darrin made Lemont gay and gave him Steve Jobs’ ghost as a lover. Went back to sleep. Woke up when my alarm went off and made a mental note not to watch American Horror Story before going to bed.

      That's a beautiful story.

    • MisTeryWriter says:

Philosophically, when the dead watch over the living (as in angels), it IS the same as being lovers. The two become one, in a sense, if the living person is attune to the angel being supportive and helpful to him/her.

Apple has been playing the Enclosed/Walled Garden bit for a long time. Got an iPod? Only music from iTunes. Open architecture for Apple II? Sue Franklin. Run OS/X on a laptop a la hackintosh? Possible prison. Want an app for iPad/iPhone? iTunes (and also censored).

Now bigger than Exxon? Not for me. If they are the rod, I'd be afraid of lightning striking more than any divining.

    • Darrin Bell says:

If Apple had a monopoly on phones and computers, I'd be a lot more critical of it than I already am.

But the MacOS makes up a tiny (if growing) percentage of OSes in use, and the Android platform has overtaken the iPhone in marketshare, thanks to its lower price and open architecture. So whatever it's market cap may be, nobody HAS to buy from Apple. Nobody's even at a disadvantage if they don't buy from Apple. So while it may be a fiefdom, it's not one anyone has to live in if they don't want to.

I think ironically the walled garden approach provides more diversity, for one fundamental reason: People who don't enjoy thinking about the technical specs of their hardware, compatibility issues, or any of the other techie aspects of computers, have an option.

Everyone else can get a PC, Droid, Windows phone, etc. And as much as I like using Apple's products, I'm pretty sure my next buy will be something like an Asus Ep121 slate running Windows 8, since Apple doesn't seem interested in letting me draw my cartoons on an iPad.

What does that mean, "Founders die"? Is there something I don't know?

  4. ChayaFradle says:

Usually, San Francisco is a quite liberal city. I'm SHOCKED at their reaction! 🙁

  5. Rob L. says:

The SF Chronicle censored this one? Or yesterday's?

    • Darrin Bell says:

Today's. Apparently they thought Lemont's mockery of the companies that he thinks use Apple as the computer industry's divining rod, went too far.

      • WWMD says:

Still think it's BS. Sorry about that.

        • Darrin Bell says:

I think what happened was the Chronicle missed the real joke in the strip (or was too shocked by the superficial joke to care about it). The superficial joke was Lemont's sarcastic remark about the extent to which other companies have been following Apple's lead (i.e. ripping Apple off) for decades. But the real joke was the meta-joke about the bounds and timing of dark humor (hence the punchlines). It was a joke about uncomfortable jokes, and people who aren't comfortable with uncomfortable jokes to begin with, probably didn't get it.
