Hi. I'm a regular reader of your site. I'm thinking of making a webcomic, so I just want to get some advices from someone who has done it. I would appreciate it if you could help guild me in some ways. For example, what is the main stream of revenues, and if possible, how do you get your comic publish? Thanks. 🙂

    • Hi there! I'm not a comic artist, but I read a ludicrous amount of comics, and did consider starting my own at one point, so I thought I'd lend you my knowledge.

Your goal might be to get syndicated, which is like a musician getting a record deal. This is fine, but you should know that plenty of artists are making a full-time living solely by having an online-only comic, or webcomic. Examples would be Penny Arcade, Questionable Content, and SMBC (google them). They mainly make money through selling merchandise and showing ads on the site.

If you do decide to create a website, you'll want to purchase a domain name, like candorville.com (I recommend Dynadot). You'll also want hosting, I use Host Gator and they're fine. Finally, I recommend using the free WordPress software to run your site, along with the (also free) ComicPress plug-in for it.

As far as the actual comic, that's up to you, but I do highly, highly recommend any books by Scott McCloud.

I only just scratched the surface of writing a comic, so if you (or anyone reading this) has further questions, just e-mail me at Odai@Athamneh.org, or talk to me on Twitter, I'm @odai.
