Darrin did you research this? Because good guess on that clarinet if you didn't. The early clarinet was decidedly inferior in sound quality compared to its contemporary flutes and oboes and was the last standard woodwind allowed in the orchestra (though the "dividing line" between the clarinet and the chalumeau isn't quite so marked).
