All languages are insane. I've noticed that the bus stop ladies have been discussing their criminal lifestyle for the last 6 months.

  2. SuburbanEcology says:

I have to agree with Ronald, here. "So long," according to Merriam Webster's online dictionary, is an interjection used to express "Farewell". I'm usually just as much a stickler on linguistic anomalies as you are, Darrin, but I find I must disagree with you on this one.

Sometimes, you just have to accept that English is an insane lnaguage.

  3. Ronald Hicks says:

Regarding "So long": It probably isn't even English. It shows up in America (but not in England) in the late 1840s, at the height of the Irish immigration because of the potato famine and sounds a whole lot like the irish word for "good-bye," slán (pronounced 'slawn.'). Most likely, English speakers hearing the word made it into the closest thing they could come up with.
