The unwillingness of some parents (in this case, Lemont's mother) to let their grown children be grown-ups and let them make their own decisions (and mistakes), or recognize any achievement they reach in a goal which does not jibe with the predetermined goals the parents set out for their children, regardless of that child's inclinations/talents, or to be supportive when their adult children run across difficulty in attempting to reach their “unauthorized” goals, is common enough that most adults will recognize Lemont's frustration, and find his response funny and clever. These adults would also already be well familiar with the general language Lemont's mother is probably against him all of the time, the unhearing judgment, the constant dismissal of Lemont's choices as unconsidered (no matter how well-argued his stance), etc., that they have no need to read her specific complaints/criticism/continuing negativity in order to get the gist of why he finally felt the need to make this answering machine message.

Basically, this is funny because it's true.

Again, communication problems. We never hear Lemont's mom saying anything, yet Lemont has all these assumptions of how she is being critical. I think we don't see Lemont's mom because Lemont is clueless as to how she really thinks or feels, and will NOT ask!!! However, can you imagine how she felt when Lemont was in Mexico and in the goony asylum? Hmmmmm. Also, what if his mom actually did suggest something that may make him happier than– his dream of being a journalist in a place that doesn't appreciate him– and sees his whole life crashing in when vampires are chasing him.. Hey, this would make for a funny strip strand! Also, I liked the little boy who is related to the lawyer. Will we see him again?

Perhaps you're projecting a bit too much of your own experience onto Lemont's mother. You might want to step back and look at this from Lemont's point of view, which is where the humor lies.
