I wonder if I'll ever be able to retire. I fear I'll be 85, greeting people at the door of Walmart when I finally keel over and face plant on the floor.

Lemont, even Jack LaLanne pulled a boat with his teeth in the water after he was retired. You CAN do the things you love if you take care of yourself now! And, save money.

I think you have to consider each's situation when reading this comic. Lemont is a single father making minimum wage (if that), and probably feels limited to that. On the other hand, Susan is a fairly well paid ad exec with no expenses but her own. I imagine that Lemont expects to be working long past retirement to survive, while Susan may be considering early retirement. It's difficult to consider ways of breaking out of poverty when you feel you're struggling to survive.
