Ah, ok. I guess you're right. But I think it's a nuance that will be lost on many of your readers… was on this one, at least… totally missed the "neo" part.

Seems besides the point, and to weaken the analogy. There *is* something non-anti-Semitic about the original swastika — as a member of one of those "eastern religions (Hinduism) I grew up with the symbol knitted into tablecloths by my little ol' brown grandmother, for example.

This same cannot be said of the confederate flag, which has *always* been affiliated with the defense of slavery, whether folks want to admit it or not.

  2. David Seay says:

Actually, swastikas WERE misappropriated by the Nazis. They are a sacred symbol in some Eastern religions dating long before Hitler.

    • Darrin Bell says:

Neo-Nazis. Not Nazis. The Nazis turned the swastika at a 45 degree angle and used it as a symbol of hatred and superiority. The NEO-Nazis are using the 45 degree-tilted symbol exactly as the Nazis intended it to be used.

  3. Drew Kime says:

Well … Neo-Nazis aren't misappropriating it, but the actual Nazis sure did. The symbol existed for millennia before the put it on a flag.
