I have an ex-girlfriend who I think had a pathological aversion to happiness. The closer she got to it, the more it scared the crap out of her. I wonder if she ever overcame it.

I told her that if she didn’t figure it out, she had the potential to go through life as a very unhappy person. She brought up the comment at our last meeting. She added, “I hate you for that.”

As my father once told me, “Between happy and unhappy, happy is better.”

Was she a dramatic person? In drama, happiness usually serves one of two purposes: it’s either a transitory calm before a storm, or it’s the end. A dramatic person might fear happiness is either fleeting, or it’s the end of her story.
