For some reason, this sounds ALL too real. I've taught school and this storyline, minus the Starbucks, often happened. Unfortunately, the real children I taught didn't handle their dad leaving as well as Lemont. Those kids ended up in gangs or worse, but there were a few who were able to survive with a very sound character. I don't know why some survive and some fall apart. It has to be an inner strength, I suppose. I was going to say, "Poor Lemont", but no, I think he's one of the survivors. At least, from my perspective as a teacher. Well, former teacher. Good strip!!! If I were still teaching, I'd be able to use it as a conversational opener and/or a topic of an essay on survival skills or on growing up strong and self-confident no matter what the earlier situation was.
