  • There was an op-ed in the New York Times a couple of weeks back by Prof. Henry Louis Gates, Jr., about the uncomfortable history of Africans selling other Africans to white slavers:http://nyti.ms/clanoB Human beings have a long history of being horrible to their immediate neighbors. Africans trading/selling Africans into slavery a much larger part of the history of slavery than many people in America feel comfortable discussing, so it generally hasn't been included in history taught in primary and secondary schools in America. Americans are rarely comfortable with gray areas caused by complications of black-white (no pun intended) simplistic narratives, which is why primary and secondary school history is so often badly taught.
