I think in "The Shoes of the Fisherman", the Pope causes a controversy by opening up the vast resources of the Catholic Church to help feed starving people.
If the Church does not do good with the tithes it collects, what is the point?
The point? For the church founders to get rich quick(ly).
When I traversed into the world of Christianity, my pastor had a poor fund where he gave money to the poor. They were required to pay it back, eve n though when they had been working, they tithed. That is just plain wrong. See: Proverbs 3:27
Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to do it.
