After reading "Wild Seed", I was hooked. To this day Butler is my favorite scifi writer, although I'm not sure she would label herself as such.
"Wild Seed" was awesome! Thank you for the reminder --- I've been trying to figure out what I should read next; now I know. Off I go to alibris for a copy of "Lilith's Brood".

I just looked it up on Amazon and gave a few pages a go. Well written, quickly captivating, leaves me with lots of questions that can only be answered by more reading.

Nice to know someone else has those thoughts, that civilization will eventually collapse, order will be destroyed, and we''ll struggle to survive in some kind of dark, post-apocalyptic wasteland. Do not read The Road by Cormac McCarthy at night, or possibly ever if you relate, as it is so perfect in this respect as to have spun me into depression for a few weeks.

If you want one that's equally depressing but that you just can't put down anyway (and has some surprisingly uplifting moments), try Octavia Butler's "Parable of the Sower" and the sequel "Parable of the Talents." ...and her other post-apocalyptic series: "Dawn," "Adulthood Rites" and "Imago." (sold in a collected edition as "Lilith's Brood." If you haven't read them already, you'll probably like them a lot.
