    • bcmayes, yep. She may have been about to confess to murdering her boyfriend, and Lemont honed in on something inconsequential. That is the tongue in cheek, sarcastic type of humor that sometimes shows up in Candorville that makes it different from other cartoons.

  • gloves are off
    Fig. There is going to be a serious dispute. (As if boxers had removed their gloves in order to inflict more damage. See also take the gloves off.

  • The gloves are for protection of those same knuckles. You remove some of the padding near the outside leather, and replace it with a couple pounds of birdshot, _then_ you have some power to apply!

  • Oddnoc, yes, that's my understanding of it too. So most likely, we're both wrong. :-)

  • See, now I always thought it was a boxing metaphor: forget that Marquis of Queensbury! I'm going after you bare-knuckled! But maybe that's just my own idiosyncratic idea.
