(just because his TV airs network debacles doesn't mean he couldn't just accept it as the way of TVs, and continue watching Cosby reruns. Guys I like this comic and all but these last few have been dumb...you really think half a nation full of white people are going to go to war, get killed in nasty ways just to free some black slaves? Your giving the north WAY to much credit. The whole slave thing was just the icing on the cake.
Darrin's right. The point isn't about why the North started the war, the issue here is that the South turned against their nation and started a war. Northern soldiers weren't perfect people committed to a vision of absolute equality. At least they didn't start a futile war in defense of the immoral institution of slavery.
The South started the war to preserve slavery. Every other reason was subordinate to that. Even if the entire Union army were bigots and Lincoln had tattooed "I hate slaves" on his chest, that doesn't change the fact that the war was fought over slavery.
Neither side fought the war over slavery. The south wanted to strengthen it's federal government so it didn't have to listen to the central government, which it no longer controlled. Many people in the South voted for Lincoln.
To be fair, Rick Perry "playing with" secession is roughly analogous to him playing with himself. He was somewhat embarrassed when he got caught and isn't going to do it again (in public).
Always said you can make a civil rights law, but you can't change the heart of a racist through a law. They will pass it on to their children over numerous generations. We see that today in America.
And now we have another Texas governor playing with the idea of secession.
